If fibre has not reached your address, 5G is the closest substitute and LTE is the fallback. Both are wireless, both work through a router, and neither needs a trench dug to your property.

Check whether that is actually true first

Fibre coverage in South Africa expands continuously, and providers do not always advertise newly lit areas well. Before committing to a wireless contract, check current fibre availability at your exact address — not your suburb.

It is also worth asking neighbours. Fibre often reaches one side of a street before the other.

5G first, if the signal supports it

Where 5G coverage is strong, it delivers speeds comparable to entry and mid-tier fibre. The catch is that performance depends on signal strength and how busy the tower is — so it varies through the day in a way fibre does not.

LTE where 5G has not arrived

LTE coverage is far broader and works almost everywhere with mobile signal. It is slower and latency is higher, but for browsing, streaming and general use it is entirely workable.

Two things to insist on

  1. Test the signal where the router will stand — a window-facing position often doubles throughput. Coverage maps are modelled, not measured.
  2. Ask about the fair-use threshold on any uncapped plan, and the speed after it.

Given that wireless performance is unpredictable until installed, a shorter or month-to-month term is worth its premium here.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best alternative to fibre?

5G where the signal is strong, otherwise LTE.

Is wireless internet good enough for working from home?

Usually, though latency is higher than fibre. Test before committing.

Should I take a 24-month term?

Be cautious. Wireless performance is unproven until installed.
