An LTE router takes a SIM and shares that mobile connection over WiFi to your household. It is the most widely usable home internet hardware in South Africa, because LTE reaches almost everywhere fibre and 5G do not.

Where the router stands matters more than the router
LTE performance depends on signal at the device’s physical position. Moving a router from a back room to a window can change throughput noticeably, and no specification compensates for a poor position.
Test before committing to a term, and ideally test at the exact spot you intend to use. A month-to-month package is the cheapest way to do that.
What to check
- Band support for your chosen network.
- Network lock on bundled hardware.
- Location lock on the package.
- Number of devices it handles at once, for a busy household.
- External antenna support, which can rescue a marginal signal.
That last point is underused. Where signal is weak but present, an external antenna often improves matters more than changing provider.
Consider the alternatives first
Check fibre deals for your address, then 5G router deals if 5G reaches you. LTE is the right answer where neither is available, which is a large share of the country.
