“Unlimited” almost never means without limit. On South African wireless plans it generally means full speed up to a stated threshold, then reduced speed for the rest of the cycle. Knowing that changes how you compare offers.
The two questions that reveal the real product
- What is the fair-use threshold?
- What speed applies after it?
Ask both, and get the answers in writing. A provider unwilling to state them has told you what you needed to know.
The second question matters more than people realise. Reduced speed can mean anything from mildly slower to unusable for video — those are very different products sold under the same word.
Unlimited, uncapped, capped
| Term | What it usually means |
|---|---|
| Capped | A stated amount at full speed, then it stops or bills extra |
| Uncapped | No hard stop, but a fair-use threshold applies |
| Unlimited | Marketing for the same thing as uncapped |

Capped is often the better buy
If the fair-use threshold sits near what a large capped bundle offers, the capped plan gives you the same usable volume at consistent speed throughout — better for video calls and gaming, and easier to reason about.
Unlimited earns its place when usage is genuinely unpredictable, or several people share the connection.
Without a contract
Month-to-month and prepaid options exist and cost more per gigabyte. That premium is worth paying while a wireless service is unproven at your address — you can leave if the real-world speed disappoints.

Frequently asked questions
Is unlimited wifi really unlimited?
Generally not. A fair-use threshold applies.
What should I ask?
The threshold, and the speed after it — in writing.
Is capped better?
Often, if you would not exceed a large bundle.
