The choice is not between limited and unlimited. It is between a known volume at consistent speed, and an unknown volume at variable speed — because almost every uncapped package in South Africa applies a fair-use threshold, after which speeds are reduced.
What uncapped actually means
| Model | Behaviour |
|---|---|
| Fair-use threshold | Full speed to a stated volume, then reduced for the rest of the cycle |
| Traffic management | Certain traffic slowed at peak times regardless of volume |
| Genuinely uncapped | Rare on wireless, more common on fibre, usually costlier |
Two questions settle it: what is the threshold, and what speed applies afterwards. A provider unwilling to state both in writing has answered you.
When capped is better
- Your usage is predictable and a capped bundle comfortably covers it.
- Consistent speed matters — working from home, gaming, regular video calls.
- The capped volume is close to the uncapped threshold, in which case you get the same data without the throttling.
That last point is the one people miss. If an uncapped package throttles at roughly what a capped package offers, capped gives you the same usable volume at full speed throughout.
When uncapped is better
- Usage is unpredictable or varies sharply month to month.
- Several people share the connection and you would rather not police it.
- Running out mid-month would be worse than running slower.
Uncapped buys the removal of a decision, which for a busy household is worth something on its own.
By connection type
Fibre uncapped is closest to genuinely unlimited and carries the fewest restrictions. Wireless uncapped — LTE especially — is the most likely to be meaningfully throttled.

Before you choose
- Get the fair-use threshold and post-threshold speed in writing.
- Check your actual usage first. See how much data do I need.
- Compare against a large capped bundle at the same price — see 100GB and 200GB data contract deals.
- Check the peak and off-peak split on capped options.

Frequently asked questions
Is uncapped really unlimited?
Rarely. Most packages apply a fair-use threshold after which speeds are reduced.
Which is faster?
Capped, once an uncapped package passes its threshold. Before that they are comparable.
What should I ask the provider?
The threshold volume, and the speed that applies after it.
Which suits working from home?
Capped, if it covers your usage — consistent speed matters more than volume for calls.
