Consoles are a genuine Black Friday category — bundles and discounts do appear. The risk is not the price; it is signing a long credit agreement for a discretionary purchase under time pressure.
Check it is a real discount
Note the current price before the sale so you have a baseline. Compare against what the same configuration normally sells for, not a recommended retail price nobody charges.
Watch for these structures:
- A bundle whose included games you would not have bought
- The digital-only console discounted, when you wanted the disc version
- A longer credit term producing a lower monthly and a higher total
- An older bundle being cleared
Disc or digital still matters more than the discount
A digital-only console cannot play second-hand discs. In South Africa, where pre-owned games are a real saving, that limitation usually outweighs the upfront difference.
Do not let a sale price change a decision you had already reasoned through.
Consider paying outright
If a discount brings a console within reach of what you can pay in cash, that is the better outcome. A console is entertainment, and financing entertainment over two years is how a good sale price becomes an expensive purchase.
Lay-by, where offered, is the middle path — no credit agreement, nothing to default on.
Budget the whole setup
Second controller, online subscription, games, storage expansion. A sale on the console does not discount any of these.
