FoneYam is a smartphone rental programme, not a network contract. You apply with a valid ID, pay an upfront amount when you collect the phone at a participating PEP, Ackermans, Dunns or HiFi Corp store, and then make fixed rental payments for a set term. Airtime and data are not included, and the phone can be locked remotely if a payment is missed. Use this page to see how FoneYam’s “contract” works, how it differs from other contract deals, and what to check before you apply.
Current FoneYam Contract Deals
CURRENT MARKET FACT (checked 25 September 2026 on FoneYam’s site): FoneYam is a device rental service, not a network contract. There is no SIM, airtime or data included — you rent the handset, on 12-month terms, and arrange connectivity yourself. It listed 38 devices when we checked.
| Device | From (per month) | Term |
|---|---|---|
| Samsung Galaxy A04e | R150 pm | x12 |
| Hisense E72 | R162 pm | x12 |
| Hisense M88 Pro | R175 pm | x12 |
| Hisense E73 / Hisense Enigma / Samsung Galaxy A04 | R187 pm | x12 |
| Honor Choice T10 | R200 pm | x12 |
| Xiaomi Redmi A7 / Honor X5c | R212 pm | x12 |
| Samsung Galaxy A07 / Motorola g06 Power / Xiaomi Redmi 15C | R274 pm | x12 |
| Honor X5C Plus / Motorola G06 | R287 pm | x12 |
| Vivo Y04 | R349 pm | x12 |
| Vivo Y05 | R374 pm | x12 |
The most important line on the page is the footnote, and it is easy to miss: those monthly figures exclude an upfront payment and a “Day-7” payment. The advertised monthly is based on the selling price of the device, so the real first-month cost is higher than the headline. Ask for both amounts before you apply.
The rental model changes what you are comparing. A 12-month rental at R150 a month is not the same commitment as a 24- or 36-month contract, and at the end of the term the device is not automatically yours — check the end-of-term options. FoneYam does include free insurance covering death, disability, loss of income, and loss or theft of the device, which a standard network contract normally does not.
Because there is no bundled data, budget for a separate SIM or data plan on top of the rental.
FoneYam calls its agreement a “FoneYam contract”, but its own FAQ and insurance information describe it as a rental agreement. That distinction matters: FoneYam rents you a phone, you pay for the right to use it, and at the end of the term you can choose to buy it or return it.
On the official site, FoneYam lists two offer types:
| Offer | Who it’s for | Structure (per FoneYam’s FAQ) |
|---|---|---|
| Blue Offer | New and returning customers | Rental period of 13 months and 7 days: an upfront payment, a Day-7 payment and 12 monthly rental payments |
| Yellow Offer | Only selected customers who have completed a FoneYam contract and are offered this option | Rental period of 19 months with 18 monthly payments, and no upfront or Day-7 payment |
FoneYam says the upfront payment, where it applies, is 30% of the device’s retail price. You pay it when you collect the phone, and the exact amount is confirmed when the device is scanned at the till. Device monthly amounts on FoneYam’s site exclude the upfront and Day-7 payments, so work out the full cost before you compare. Devices and pricing change, so check the live list on FoneYam before applying.

FoneYam Phone Contract Deals
How FoneYam differs from a network phone contract
| Feature | FoneYam rental | Typical network phone contract |
|---|---|---|
| What you get | A phone to use for the rental term | A phone plus a monthly airtime, data or minutes plan |
| Airtime and data | Not included; buy them separately on any network | Included in the monthly price |
| Term | Fixed rental period per offer | Fixed contract term set by the network |
| Upfront cost | Upfront payment where applicable, plus a Day-7 payment on the Blue Offer | Varies by deal; many have little or no upfront payment |
| Application requirements shown | Valid SA ID or passport, aged 18+, photo taken at application | Usually ID, proof of address, bank statements or payslips, and a credit and affordability check |
| Missed payment | Phone is locked remotely until payment is received | Network collections process; service may be suspended |
| End of term | Buy the device at fair market value or return it to a PEP store | You generally keep the device; upgrade or continue month to month |
| Payment method | Pay@ at participating stores, online or EFT | Debit order |
The device lock
FoneYam’s FAQ explains that the phone is locked remotely in several situations:
- You miss a payment that is due.
- You change the SIM without FoneYam’s prior approval.
- You report the device lost or stolen.
- The phone has had no data or Wi-Fi connection for 30 days or more.
- The rental contract has ended and you haven’t bought the device.
While the phone is locked, FoneYam says you can only call its contact centre and make emergency calls. You can use a SIM from any network, but the SIM linked to your FoneYam contract must stay in the first SIM slot unless FoneYam approves a change.
Who FoneYam may suit
- People who can’t get, or don’t want, a network contract and prefer to buy airtime and data separately.
- Buyers who want to apply online or in store and collect the phone the same day.
- People comfortable with a device lock and able to make the upfront and scheduled payments on time.
It is less suitable if you want data and minutes included in one monthly price, or if you want to own the phone outright without paying a separate purchase amount at the end.
FoneYam Deals by Brand
FoneYam’s device list changes regularly. On the day we checked, it included models from:
| Brand | Typical range listed |
|---|---|
| Samsung Galaxy | Entry-level A-series models |
| Xiaomi | Redmi entry and budget models |
| HONOR | Entry-level X-series and Choice models |
| vivo | Entry-level Y-series models |
| Motorola | Budget g-series models |
| Hisense | Budget and entry-level models |
The range focuses on entry-level and budget smartphones. Flagship phones were not in the list we saw. Stock depends on the store and model, so ask a FoneYam assistant in store or check the website before you go.
When you compare brands, look at the full rental cost, which is the upfront amount, the Day-7 payment and all monthly payments. The monthly figure alone can make similar phones look further apart or closer together than they really are.
Double and Bundle Deals
We did not see any double deals, 2-for-1 offers or two-device bundles on FoneYam’s site. Its FAQ describes a rental agreement for one device, with a linked SIM.
If you need two phones, check with FoneYam whether you can hold more than one rental agreement at once. Remember that each device would have its own upfront payment, payment schedule and lock conditions. If a genuine two-device bundle matters to you, a network contract or a reseller that advertises double deals may be a better fit, subject to its own credit and affordability assessment.
Included insurance
FoneYam includes insurance on qualifying rental contracts. The cover is for death, disability, loss of income, and lost or stolen devices. It’s not a bundle deal in the usual sense, but it does affect value. FoneYam says the insurance comes at no extra cost, and FoneYam itself is the insured party because it owns the device. The terms for lost or stolen claims depend on when you accepted your contract, so read clause 7 of FoneYam’s terms and conditions.
Application, Delivery and Collection Options
Where to apply
FoneYam says you can apply:
- online on the FoneYam website,
- through FoneYam’s WhatsApp channel, or
- at selected PEP, Ackermans, Dunns and HiFi Corp stores.
Applying online versus in a PEP or Ackermans store
Both routes end in the same place: an approved application and an in-store collection. What differs is where the admin happens.
- Online (or on WhatsApp). You complete the application and have your photo taken through the site, then collect at a participating store and pay the upfront amount there.
- In store. You do the whole application at the counter at a selected PEP, Ackermans, Dunns or HiFi Corp, and the device is scanned at the till so the exact upfront amount is confirmed before you pay.
If you are already going to a PEP or Ackermans, the in-store route saves a step. If you would rather know the outcome before travelling, apply online first and take your ID and reference SMS with you.
What you need
- A valid South African ID, or a passport if you are a foreign national.
- You must be 18 or older.
- A photo, taken online or in store during the application.
- The upfront payment, where applicable, when you collect the phone.
- Your ID or passport and the SMS with your reference number when you collect.
FoneYam doesn’t publish the full criteria it uses to approve applications. Approval is not guaranteed, and it depends on FoneYam’s own assessment.
Collection, not delivery
FoneYam’s process is built around in-store collection. Once your application is approved, you collect the phone at a participating store and pay the upfront amount there. We didn’t see a home-delivery option on the pages we checked.
Paying and ending the agreement
- Payments can be made through Pay@ at participating stores, online through Pay@, or by EFT, using your reference number. Keep that reference number somewhere you can find it, because it is what links a payment to your agreement.
- End of term: FoneYam gives you the first option to buy the device at its fair market value, or you can return it to a PEP store. After that, you can apply for another rental.
- Early cancellation needs 20 business days’ written notice and carries a cancellation penalty. The penalty depends on whether you return the device.
How to Compare FoneYam Offers
| What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Total rental cost | Add the upfront, Day-7 and all monthly payments together |
| Purchase amount at the end | Fair market value is set at termination, so ownership costs extra |
| Airtime and data budget | You still need to pay for connectivity separately |
| Lock conditions | Missed payments, SIM changes and 30 days offline can all lock the phone |
| Cancellation penalty | Early exit isn’t free |
| Insurance terms | What’s covered and when the contract ends after a claim |
| Device specification | Budget models vary a lot in storage and battery life |
Compare against other routes
- Network contract: can include data and minutes, and you generally keep the phone, but a credit and affordability assessment applies.
- Online reseller: for the network-contract route through an online platform, see Mondo cellphone contract deals.
- Other device and connectivity contracts: see Blue Label Connect contract deals.
- Buying outright: if you can save for a budget phone, buying cash avoids rental payments and lock conditions.
A note on the name
FoneYam is frequently written as “phone yam”, “fone yam” or “phoneyam”, and searched for alongside the stores that carry it, such as PEP and Ackermans. They all refer to the same rental programme. The official spelling on the company’s own site is FoneYam.
FoneYam Contract Deal FAQs
Is FoneYam a cellphone contract?
Not in the network sense. FoneYam calls it a contract, but it is a rental agreement for a smartphone. Airtime and data are not included, and you choose whether to buy or return the phone at the end.
Does FoneYam do a credit check?
FoneYam’s application asks for an ID or passport and a photo. It doesn’t set out its full approval criteria on the pages we checked. Approval depends on FoneYam’s assessment and is not guaranteed.
How much is the FoneYam upfront payment?
FoneYam says it is 30% of the device’s retail price where applicable. The exact amount is shown when the phone is scanned at the till. The Yellow Offer for selected returning customers has no upfront payment.
What happens if I miss a FoneYam payment?
FoneYam locks the phone remotely until it receives the payment. You can still make emergency calls and contact FoneYam. If you’re struggling to pay, contact FoneYam early to discuss arrangements.
Can I use any network SIM in a FoneYam phone?
Yes. FoneYam says you can use a SIM from any network, but the SIM linked to your contract must stay in the first SIM slot. Changing it without approval locks the device.
Do I own the phone at the end?
Not automatically. You can buy it at fair market value, which is set when the contract ends, or return it to a PEP store.
How do I pay FoneYam online?
Through Pay@, either at a participating store or online, or by EFT. Use the reference number on your agreement so the payment is matched to your account.
Can I apply for FoneYam at PEP or Ackermans?
Yes. FoneYam applications are taken at selected PEP, Ackermans, Dunns and HiFi Corp stores, as well as online and on WhatsApp.
Where do I collect a FoneYam phone?
At a participating PEP, Ackermans, Dunns or HiFi Corp store, after your application is approved.
