The iPhone XR isn’t available on contract from South Africa’s main networks. When we checked in September 2026, Vodacom and MTN didn’t list it online, either new or pre-owned, and Apple no longer sells it in South Africa. Our earlier checks of Telkom and Cell C found the same.
The closest affordable route today is a pre-owned iPhone 11, iPhone 13 or iPhone 14 on contract. This page compares those options, explains what you give up or gain, and lists what to check before you apply. For every Apple model we cover, start at iPhone Contract Deals.
Compare iPhone XR Contract Deals
Here’s where the iPhone XR and its nearest alternatives stood on each network’s online shop.
| Network | iPhone XR listed? | Closest alternatives listed |
|---|---|---|
| Vodacom | No | Pre-owned iPhone 11, iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 |
| MTN | No | Pre-owned iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 |
| Telkom | No (team check, not re-verified) | Pre-owned iPhone 13 |
| Cell C | No (team check, not re-verified) | Certified pre-owned iPhone 13 |
What the iPhone XR offered
Apple’s tech specs list the iPhone XR with a 6.1-inch Liquid Retina HD LCD display, the A12 Bionic chip, a single 12MP Wide rear camera and a Lightning connector. It came in 64GB, 128GB and 256GB. It supports LTE, but Apple’s specs don’t list 5G.
That matters when you compare. Every alternative below has a newer chip, and the pre-owned iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 are listed as 5G phones.
Monthly Price and Contract Term
With no iPhone XR on contract, there’s no current network price for it. If you see an iPhone XR contract elsewhere, check whether the phone is new, pre-owned or refurbished, who is financing it, and how long the contract runs.
What the alternatives cost (checked September 2026)
| Alternative | Network | Listed from |
|---|---|---|
| Pre-owned iPhone 11 64GB | Vodacom | R329 pm |
| Pre-owned iPhone 13 128GB | MTN | R399 pm x 36 |
| Pre-owned iPhone 14 128GB | MTN | R449 pm x 36 |
| Pre-owned iPhone 13 128GB (2 phones) | Vodacom | R599 pm x 36 |
| iPhone 16e 128GB (new) | Vodacom | R449 pm |
“From” prices usually apply to the smallest plan and can change without notice. Confirm the price on the deal page on the day you apply.
Contract length
People often search for 12-month or 24-month XR deals. The pre-owned alternatives we found at MTN were on 36-month terms. A longer term lowers the monthly amount but increases the total you pay, so work out monthly price × months before choosing.
Data, Minutes and Included Extras
Budget iPhone deals often come with small bundles. Compare:
- Anytime data each month and whether any is restricted to certain times or apps
- Minutes, and whether calls are capped
- Top-up plans, which stop surprise out-of-bundle charges
- Extras on pre-owned phones, such as a cable or charger
If your plan runs out every month, a slightly bigger bundle can save you money over the contract.
Current Networks, Retailers or Providers
Vodacom
Vodacom’s pre-owned iPhone promotion listed the iPhone 11, iPhone 13 and iPhone 14. The iPhone 11 is the closest in age and price to the XR. Browse Vodacom’s pre-owned iPhone range for what’s in stock.
MTN
MTN’s pre-owned section showed the iPhone 13 and iPhone 14, both on 36-month contracts. No XR or iPhone 11.
Telkom
From our team’s check earlier this month, Telkom’s only pre-owned iPhone was the iPhone 13. Its shop didn’t load for us on the day of writing, so check it directly.
Cell C
Cell C listed a certified pre-owned iPhone 13 in the same earlier check, alongside newer models, but no iPhone XR.
Upfront Costs, Fees and Promotion Terms
Before signing for any alternative, check:
- Connection or SIM fees on the deal page
- Upfront payments, which some deals or credit outcomes may require
- Delivery charges for your area
- Promotion dates and whether the price is for new customers or upgrades
- Pre-owned conditions: grading, battery health, warranty and returns
- Annual price increases in the terms and conditions
Don’t assume a deal has no upfront cost unless the deal page says so.
What to Check Before You Apply
1. The model. An iPhone 11 is a different phone from an iPhone XR, with a newer chip. 2. Storage. Compare 64GB against 128GB options if you keep lots of photos or apps. 3. 5G. If you want 5G, choose an iPhone 13 or newer. 4. Total cost. Monthly price × term, plus once-off fees. 5. Documents and checks. Expect to provide ID, proof of address and bank details. Networks may run credit and affordability checks, and approval isn’t guaranteed.
