The iPhone 12 Pro Max isn’t currently available on contract from South Africa’s main networks. In our September 2026 checks, Vodacom, MTN, Telkom and Cell C didn’t list it in their online shops, new or pre-owned, and Apple no longer sells it in its South African lineup. None of the networks listed any iPhone 12 model.
That leaves two practical routes on contract: an affordable pre-owned iPhone from a later generation, or a newer large-screen iPhone. This page explains both and what to check before applying. For the full Apple range, start at iPhone Contract Deals.

| MTN | No | iPhone 13, iPhone 14 | iPhone 17 Pro Max |

What the iPhone 12 Pro Max offered
According to Apple’s tech specs, the iPhone 12 Pro Max has a 6.7-inch OLED display, the A14 Bionic chip, a 12MP Pro camera system with 2.5x optical zoom in, a LiDAR Scanner, MagSafe wireless charging up to 15W, 5G and an IP68 rating. It uses a Lightning connector and was sold in 128GB, 256GB and 512GB.
Who should consider which route
- You want a low monthly cost: a pre-owned iPhone 13 or 14 is a newer phone than the 12 Pro Max, though smaller and without a telephoto camera.
- You want a big screen and Pro cameras: a newer Pro Max is the only like-for-like option on network contracts.
- You already own a working phone: a SIM-only plan could cost less than taking on a new device contract.
Monthly Price and Contract Term
With no network listing the iPhone 12 Pro Max, there’s no current monthly price to compare. If you come across an “iPhone 12 Pro Max contract” elsewhere, check:
- who finances it: a network, retailer or third-party lender
- the device condition: new, pre-owned or refurbished, and how it’s graded
- the full term: 24 or 36 months
- the total cost: monthly price multiplied by the term, plus once-off fees
Be careful with long terms on older phones. A 36-month contract on an older iPhone means you’d still be paying for it long after newer models have replaced it, and software support may end before the contract does.
Data, Minutes and Included Extras
Pre-owned iPhone deals are often advertised at their lowest “from” price, which usually pairs the phone with the smallest plan. Before choosing, compare:
- how much anytime data you get each month
- whether minutes are capped or unlimited
- whether it’s a top-up plan that limits out-of-bundle spend
- whether a charging cable is included with a pre-owned device
- whether device insurance is added, and whether you can remove it
If you use a lot of data, a plan with a bigger allocation can work out cheaper than regular add-on bundles.
Current Networks, Retailers or Providers
Vodacom
Vodacom’s pre-owned iPhone range covered the iPhone 11, iPhone 13 and standard iPhone 14. It’s the only network that listed a pre-owned iPhone older than the 13, but not the 12 Pro Max.
MTN
MTN’s pre-owned range showed the standard iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 only. Its September 2026 catalogue (valid until 6 October 2026) lists new models from the iPhone 15 and 16e up to the iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max.
Telkom
Telkom’s only pre-owned iPhone was the standard iPhone 13, with new models from the iPhone 15 upwards.
Cell C
Cell C listed a certified pre-owned iPhone 13 alongside the iPhone 15, 16 and 17 families. There was no iPhone 12 model.
Retailers and pre-owned specialists
Some resellers and refurbishers may sell an iPhone 12 Pro Max for cash or on credit. We haven’t verified any current offers. If you consider one, check grading, battery health, warranty and who you’ll be paying each month.
Upfront Costs, Fees and Promotion Terms
Whichever alternative you choose, check:
- connection or SIM fees on the deal page
- delivery costs, which may depend on your area
- deposits, which may be requested after a credit assessment
- promotion end dates and whether a price is for new customers or upgrades only
- pre-owned terms, including warranty length and battery condition
- annual price increases in the contract terms
- early cancellation costs if you want to end the contract early
What to Check Before You Apply
1. Exact model: confirm the model name, storage and whether it’s a Pro Max. 2. Age of the phone: consider how long the device will keep receiving iOS updates. 3. New or pre-owned: confirm condition, grading and warranty. 4. Customer type: some iPhone deals are for upgrades only. 5. Total cost: monthly price × term, plus once-off fees. 6. Documents and checks: networks usually ask for your ID, proof of address and bank details, and may run credit and affordability checks. Approval isn’t guaranteed.
For a more affordable Apple route that networks actually list, compare iPhone 13 Contract Deals, mainly offered pre-owned, and iPhone 11 Contract Deals, which Vodacom listed as a pre-owned option.
iPhone 12 Pro Max Contract Deals FAQs
Can I get an iPhone 12 Pro Max on contract in South Africa?
Not from the main networks’ online shops in our September 2026 checks. Vodacom, MTN, Telkom and Cell C didn’t list it, new or pre-owned.
Is any iPhone 12 model still available on contract?
We didn’t find any iPhone 12 model on the four networks’ online shops when we checked.
What’s the closest affordable alternative?
A pre-owned iPhone 13 was listed by all four networks. It’s smaller than the 12 Pro Max and has no telephoto camera, but it’s a newer phone.
Does the iPhone 12 Pro Max support MagSafe?
Yes. Apple’s tech specs list MagSafe wireless charging up to 15W.
Is it worth taking an older iPhone on a long contract?
It depends on your budget and how long you keep phones. Compare the total contract cost with buying a pre-owned phone outright and using a SIM-only plan.
Could the iPhone 12 Pro Max come back on contract?
It’s unlikely to return as a new-device deal. Pre-owned ranges change, so check network pre-owned sections from time to time.
