The A12 was one of the biggest-selling phones in South Africa — a huge battery, a big screen and a low price. It sold enormously well, and a great many are still in use.
Popular then does not mean right now
Being a best-seller tells you it was well priced when it launched. It says nothing about whether it is a good purchase today, several years on.
The question that matters is whether it still receives security updates. Entry phones from this era are at or past the end of that window. Confirm the current position before buying — particularly if you plan to use banking apps on it.
If you already own one
Keep using it. A working phone is a working phone, and there is no reason to replace something that does what you need.
Two sensible precautions:
- Be cautious about banking and payment apps if updates have stopped
- A battery replacement is inexpensive and restores most of the original experience
If it still works, moving to a SIM-only plan and keeping the phone is the cheapest option available to you.
If you are replacing it
| Priority | Look at |
|---|---|
| Same budget, much longer support | Galaxy A16 |
| A better screen | Galaxy A15 |
| The cheapest possible route | Buy outright, take SIM-only |

Frequently asked questions
Was the A12 a good phone?
Yes, for its price at the time. That was several years ago.
Should I still buy one?
Check the security update status first. A current entry model is usually better.
Should I replace mine?
Not if it works — though be careful with banking apps if updates have stopped.
