A data-only SIM gives you data without voice or a handset — the cheapest way to connect a tablet, laptop, router or second device.
How it differs from a SIM-only voice plan
| Data-only SIM | SIM-only voice plan | |
|---|---|---|
| Includes calls | No | Yes |
| Data per rand | Better | Lower |
| Best for | Tablets, routers, laptops | Your main phone |
If a device does not make calls, a voice plan wastes money on minutes you cannot use. See data SIM vs SIM only.
Why approval is easier
No handset is financed, so far less credit is extended and the assessment threshold is correspondingly lower. Terms are often shorter too — sometimes month-to-month.
See SIM only vs phone contract for approval.
Check the SIM size and device lock
Confirm the SIM format your device takes, and whether it uses a physical SIM or eSIM. Router SIMs are sometimes restricted to a specific device — ask before assuming you can move it.
Size the allocation honestly
Data-only SIMs are where people most often over-buy. A tablet used at home on WiFi needs very little; a router serving a household needs a great deal. Check your actual usage first.
