“Cells” is an ambiguous search term. In South African usage it usually points to one of three things — here is how to get to the right one.
What you probably mean
| If you meant | Go to |
|---|---|
| Cell C, the network | Cell C contract deals |
| Cellphone contracts generally | cellular contract deals |
| A cellphone retailer | Cellular City or Cellspot |
The basics, whichever you meant
A cellphone contract in South Africa is a credit agreement with mobile service attached. That framing explains the rest:
- An affordability assessment is required by law, which is why no-credit-check contracts do not exist
- Leaving early costs money — usually the outstanding device balance plus a penalty
- The total is what matters — monthly × term, plus upfront
The three contract types
Ordered by how hard they are to be approved for:
- Handset contract — phone plus service, highest bar
- SIM-only — service only, much lower bar, far cheaper
- Data-only — lowest bar of all
If your current phone still works, SIM-only is the biggest saving available to most people. See SIM only deals.
