The iPhone 16 Pro Max isn’t currently offered on contract by South Africa’s four main networks. When we checked in September 2026, Vodacom, MTN, Telkom and Cell C didn’t list it online, either new or pre-owned. Apple’s South African iPhone lineup also no longer includes it: the Pro model Apple now sells is the iPhone 17 Pro range.
If you want a large-screen Pro iPhone on contract, the realistic routes are the newer iPhone 17 Pro Max or the standard iPhone 16, which all four networks still list. What the iPhone 16 Pro Max offers
According to Apple’s iPhone 16 Pro Max tech specs, it has a 6.9-inch OLED display with ProMotion (up to 120Hz) and an Always-On display, the A18 Pro chip, a 48MP Fusion main camera and a 12MP 5x Telephoto camera. It has both the Action button and Camera Control, uses USB-C with USB 3 speeds, and supports 5G. It was sold in 256GB, 512GB and 1TB.
That feature set is why people still search for it. On contract today, though, the Pro features come with the iPhone 17 Pro Max.
Monthly Price and Contract Term
Because no network listed the iPhone 16 Pro Max, there’s no current monthly price to compare. If you see it advertised on contract elsewhere, confirm who is financing the phone, whether it’s new, pre-owned or refurbished, and the full contract term.
What the alternatives cost at Telkom
Telkom’s catalogue for 7 September to 6 October 2026 gives the clearest verified comparison:
- iPhone 17 Pro Max 256GB: R1 079 pm x 36, or R1 479 x 24, on FlexOn 6 (checked September 2026).
- iPhone 16 128GB: R709 pm x 36, or R969 x 24, on FlexOn 4 (checked September 2026). This is the standard model, not the Pro Max.
MTN’s catalogue, also valid until 6 October 2026, lists the iPhone 17 Pro Max 256GB at R1 229 pm x 36 on deluxe and the standard iPhone 16 128GB at R699 pm x 36 on plus (checked September 2026, while stock lasts). Vodacom and Cell C also list the iPhone 17 Pro Max. Check each network’s deal page for its current monthly price.
How the term changes the total
A 36-month term lowers the monthly amount compared with 24 months, but you commit for a year longer. Multiply the monthly price by the number of months, then add once-off fees, before deciding which term suits your budget.
Data, Minutes and Included Extras
A Pro Max contract price is only half the comparison. The plan attached to it decides how useful the deal is. For example, Telkom’s FlexOn 6 plan on the iPhone 17 Pro Max includes 6GB Anytime data, 1 000 Telkom-to-Telkom minutes and 150 all-network minutes, plus 20GB of once-off bonus data valid for 31 days.
When comparing any alternative, check:
- Anytime data each month, and whether night or bonus data has limits
- All-network minutes versus on-net minutes
- Once-off bonuses, which don’t repeat for the rest of the contract
- Bundled extras, such as insurance trials or streaming, that may become paid after a promotional period
If you use a lot of data, a plan with a bigger monthly allocation can work out cheaper than buying extra bundles.
Current Networks, Retailers or Providers
Vodacom
Vodacom’s online Apple range didn’t include the iPhone 16 Pro Max. It listed the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max, the standard iPhone 16 and several older models, including pre-owned options that don’t extend to Pro Max phones.
MTN
MTN’s September 2026 catalogue has no iPhone 16 Pro Max. It does list the standard iPhone 16, the iPhone 17 Pro and the iPhone 17 Pro Max in 256GB and 512GB, with no upgrade-only label on those deals.
Telkom
Telkom’s catalogue includes the iPhone 17 Pro Max in 256GB and 512GB, and the standard iPhone 16, but not the iPhone 16 Pro Max.
Cell C
Cell C’s Apple range covered the iPhone 16, iPhone 17, iPhone Air, iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max, with no iPhone 16 Pro Max.
Retailers and pre-owned sellers
Some retailers sell pre-owned or refurbished iPhones, sometimes on a network contract. We haven’t verified iPhone 16 Pro Max stock from these sellers, so check the condition grading, warranty and who holds the contract before you commit.
Upfront Costs, Fees and Promotion Terms
Whichever alternative you pick, check these before you sign:
- SIM and connection fee: Telkom’s catalogue lists a R99 once-off SIM and connection fee (checked September 2026). Other networks set their own fees.
- Promotion dates: Telkom’s catalogue prices apply from 7 September to 6 October 2026 or while stocks last.
- Price changes: Telkom’s terms say it may adjust tariff plan charges during a fixed-term contract. Check the escalation terms on any network.
- Customer type: some iPhone prices apply to upgrades only.
- Deposits: a network may ask for one after its credit assessment.
- Delivery: costs and timing can depend on your area and stock.
What to Check Before You Apply
1. Exact model: a listing that says “iPhone 16” is the standard model, not the Pro Max. Check screen size, camera and storage. 2. Storage: the iPhone 16 Pro Max started at 256GB. Match storage when comparing an alternative, as it changes the monthly price. 3. Total cost: monthly price times the term, plus once-off fees. 4. New or pre-owned: if you find a pre-owned Pro Max, confirm warranty, battery health and grading. 5. Documents and checks: networks usually ask for ID, proof of address and bank statements, and may run credit and affordability checks. Approval isn’t guaranteed.

Can I get an iPhone 16 Pro Max on contract in South Africa?
Not from the main networks when we checked in September 2026. Vodacom, MTN, Telkom and Cell C didn’t list it, new or pre-owned.
What’s the closest alternative on contract?
The iPhone 17 Pro Max. Telkom listed the 256GB model from R1 079 pm x 36 and MTN from R1 229 pm x 36 (both catalogues valid until 6 October 2026, checked September 2026). Vodacom and Cell C also list it.
Is the standard iPhone 16 the same as the 16 Pro Max?
No. Apple’s specs show the standard iPhone 16 with a 6.1-inch display, the A18 chip rather than the A18 Pro, and a 48MP main plus 12MP Ultra Wide camera with no dedicated telephoto lens. ProMotion isn’t listed for it.
Why isn’t the iPhone 16 Pro Max on contract any more?
Apple no longer lists it in its South African lineup, and networks have moved their Pro contracts to the iPhone 17 Pro range. Remaining stock sells out over time.
Could it come back as a pre-owned deal?
Possibly, but it depends on each network’s pre-owned stock. Current pre-owned network ranges focus on older standard models, so check again before you apply.
