Do not buy a 3G-only device on a contract. South African operators have been phasing out older network generations to reuse that spectrum for 4G and 5G — which means a 3G-only phone risks losing service during the term you are still paying for.
What is happening to 3G
Mobile networks have a finite amount of spectrum. Keeping old 2G and 3G networks running consumes spectrum that would serve far more people if used for 4G or 5G, so operators worldwide are retiring them — and South Africa is part of that process.
Timelines have moved before and vary by operator and area. What does not vary is the direction: 3G is being switched off, not expanded.
Why this matters on a 24-month contract
A contract commits you for two years. A device that depends on a network being decommissioned inside that window is a device you may be paying for after it stops working properly.
This is the single strongest reason to avoid the very cheapest handsets, which are the ones most likely to be 3G-only.
What to check before signing
| Check | What you want |
|---|---|
| Network support | At minimum 4G / LTE |
| VoLTE support | Needed for calls once 3G goes |
| Band compatibility | Matching South African bands, on imported phones |
VoLTE is the one people miss. Voice calls have traditionally fallen back to older networks — without VoLTE, a phone can have working data and no reliable calling once those are retired.
What to buy instead
Any current budget Android supports 4G, and increasingly 5G. The price difference over a 3G-only handset is small and the difference in useful life is large.

Frequently asked questions
Is 3G being switched off in South Africa?
It is being phased out. Timelines vary by operator and area.
Should I buy a 3G-only phone?
No, particularly not on a 24-month contract.
What is VoLTE and do I need it?
