Samsung Galaxy S contract deals put Samsung’s flagship line on a 24 or 36-month term. The S-series is where Samsung puts its best cameras, fastest chips and premium construction — and the instalments reflect that.
The useful question is not whether the S-series is better than the A-series. It is. The question is whether it is better in ways you will actually use.
What the premium actually buys
| Advantage | Who notices it |
|---|---|
| Low-light photography | Anyone who photographs indoors or at night — the clearest real gap |
| Telephoto zoom | People who shoot distant subjects; the A-series has no true equivalent |
| Sustained performance | Gaming and heavy multitasking, not everyday use |
| Build and materials | Everyone, though it does not affect what the phone does |
| Longest software support | Anyone keeping the phone beyond a single contract |
Low-light photography and telephoto zoom are the two that genuinely cannot be matched lower down the range. If neither matters to you, the case for the S-series is weaker than the price gap suggests.
What you give up
One practical trade-off catches people out: the S-series generally does not support microSD, while many A-series models do. On a flagship, that makes the storage tier decision permanent and more expensive, since you cannot add capacity later.
If you keep a lot of media on the device, factor the higher storage tier into the comparison rather than the base price.
Current and older models
The previous generation is usually the best value in the S line. Flagship-to-flagship improvements are incremental, and last year’s model typically has a long support window remaining at a noticeably lower instalment.

S-series or A-series?
Price the upper A-series against the S-series you are considering, on the same bundle and term. For a large share of buyers the A-series covers everything they do, and the difference funds a substantially cheaper contract.

Compare by budget
Compare by budget
- Calculate the total across the term. On flagships the 24 versus 36-month gap is largest. See 24 vs 36 month phone contract.
- Consider last year’s flagship, usually the best value in the line.
- Budget for the storage tier, since there is no microSD fallback.
- Price outright plus SIM-only on expensive handsets. See SIM only deals.
Before you apply
- Storage tier — not expandable on the S-series.
- Total cost plus once-off fees.
- Insurance, given device value.
- Credit and affordability. Higher instalments carry a higher threshold, and approval is not guaranteed.

Frequently asked questions
Is the Galaxy S worth it over the A-series?
Only if you value low-light photography, telephoto zoom or sustained performance. For everyday use the upper A-series is sufficient.
Do Galaxy S phones take a memory card?
Generally not, unlike many A-series models. Choose the storage tier carefully as a result.
Which Galaxy S is best value?
Usually the previous generation, since flagship improvements are incremental and the support window remains long.
How long does Samsung support the S-series?
Current flagships receive several years of Android upgrades and security updates. Confirm for the specific model.
Should I take 24 or 36 months on a flagship?
24 months costs less in total. The support window makes 36 months less risky than on mid-range, but the total is still higher.
