The S6 edge was the first phone with a display curving down both sides. It looked extraordinary at the time, and the industry has since largely moved back toward flat screens — for reasons worth knowing if you are considering any curved-screen phone, new or used.
Why curved screens fell out of favour
- Accidental touches. Your palm rests on the curved area, producing inputs you did not intend.
- Distortion and glare. Straight lines bend at the edges and reflections gather along the curve.
- Repair cost. Curved panels are more expensive to replace, and more likely to crack on impact because the edge takes the hit.
- Screen protectors barely work. Flat protectors do not cover the curve; curved ones lift.
The benefit was aesthetic. The costs were practical, and they were felt daily.
What this means when buying
If you are choosing between a curved and a flat phone, the flat one is usually more practical. Modern flat displays with slim bezels achieve most of the visual effect without the drawbacks.
Buying a curved phone second-hand adds a specific check: inspect the edges closely for hairline cracks, which are easy to miss and expensive to repair.
Where the S6 edge stands now
It dates from 2015 and is long past software support. It also inherited the S6’s removals — no removable battery, no microSD, no water resistance.
Do not buy or finance one. See Galaxy S6.
