You can apply for a Cell C contract online by choosing a deal on Cell C’s website, creating or logging in to an account, and uploading your documents for a credit check. Cell C says credit vetting usually takes 24 to 48 business hours. Once you’re approved and RICA-verified, your phone or SIM is sent by courier, typically within 2 to 5 business days. You’ll need a valid South African ID, recent proof of residence and three months of bank statements or payslips.
Before you apply, compare phones, SIM-only plans and data deals on Cell C Contract Deals so you know which package you want.
Who Can Apply
Cell C’s online application is aimed at people who can pass its credit vetting and RICA checks. Based on what Cell C asks for, you’re in a good position to apply if you:
- Have a valid South African ID, either a green barcoded ID book or a Smart ID card
- Can prove your current address with a document less than 3 months old
- Have a regular, provable income shown on bank statements or payslips
- Can afford the monthly payment for the full 24- or 36-month term
Cell C’s contracts page didn’t publish a minimum age or income threshold when we checked in September 2026. A contract is a credit agreement, so expect Cell C to assess whether you can afford it.
Applying online or in a store
Both routes end at the same credit and affordability assessment, so choose on convenience rather than expecting a different answer. Online suits you if you would rather compare quietly and upload documents from home; a store suits you if you want help choosing a plan or would rather hand documents over in person.
Whichever you pick, have your ID, proof of address and bank details ready before you start. Applications usually stall on a missing document rather than a decision.
Existing Cell C customers
If you’re already on contract, you may be applying for an upgrade rather than a new contract. Cell C says customers are generally eligible to upgrade in the last few months of a 24-month term. Check your upgrade date in the Cell C app or on the self-service portal.
If your credit record isn’t clean
Adverse listings or missed payments can affect approval. Before applying, read our guide to 2 Phones On 1 Contract Deals For Blacklisted and bad-credit options, which explains what to check and which alternatives to consider.
What You Need Before Applying
Cell C lists these documents to meet RICA and credit requirements:
| Document | What Cell C asks for | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| ID | Valid SA green barcoded ID or Smart ID card | Make sure it’s clear and not expired or damaged |
| Proof of residence | Not older than 3 months, such as a utility bill or bank statement | The address should match your application |
| Proof of income | Most recent 3 months’ bank statements or payslips | Use complete statements, not screenshots of single pages |

Also have ready
- Your chosen deal and term. Know the phone, package and whether you want 24 or 36 months.
- Your current number, if you want to keep it. Your existing SIM must be active to receive the porting authorisation SMS.
- A delivery address where someone can receive a courier.
How the Online Application Works
According to Cell C’s FAQ, the process runs like this:
1. Choose a deal. Browse smartphones, SIM-only plans, laptops, modems or tablets on Cell C’s contracts page, and filter by 24 or 36 months. 2. Select your plan. Pick the package you want with the device. 3. Click “Buy Now”. You’ll be prompted to create a Cell C account or log in. 4. Upload your documents. Follow the steps to submit your ID, proof of residence and proof of income for credit approval. 5. Choose to port your number if you’re switching networks, using the “Port My Number” option at checkout. 6. Wait for credit vetting. Cell C says this usually takes 24 to 48 business hours. 7. Complete RICA and receive your order. After approval and RICA verification, your device or SIM is sent by courier.
A note on “Call me back”
When we checked a Cell C iPhone product page in September 2026, the ordering button read “Call me back” rather than “Buy Now”. On some deals, you may be asked to leave your details for a Cell C agent to contact you and complete the application. Check which option your chosen deal shows.
Choosing between TopUp and full postpaid
Cell C explains the difference in its FAQ:
| Plan type | How it works | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| TopUp | Service stops when your minutes or data run out, until you top up | People who want a fixed bill |
| Full postpaid | Out-of-bundle use continues and is billed at month end | People who can’t risk being cut off |
Credit Checks and Approval
Every Cell C contract application goes through credit vetting. Cell C doesn’t publish its scoring criteria, but providers typically consider your credit record, your income and existing debt, and whether the monthly payment is affordable.
- Timing: usually 24 to 48 business hours, according to Cell C.
- Outcome: approval isn’t guaranteed, even with complete documents.
- Deal size matters: a lower-priced device or SIM-only plan asks for less credit than a premium phone on a large package.
To improve your chances, make sure your documents are complete and recent, your details match across all documents, and the monthly amount you’re applying for fits comfortably within your income.
Fees, Contract Terms and Delivery
| Item | What Cell C says (checked September 2026) |
|---|---|
| Once-off fee | Most new contracts carry a once-off SIM and connection fee covering the SIM, RICA and delivery |
| Contract terms | 24 or 36 months |
| Credit vetting | Usually 24 to 48 business hours |
| Delivery | By courier, typically 2 to 5 business days depending on your area |
| Faulty on arrival | Report within 7 days for a return and replacement |
| Warranty | Standard manufacturer’s warranty |
The fee amount wasn’t shown on the pages we checked, so confirm it before you finish your application. Also check whether your deal’s price can change during the term, and what you’d pay to cancel early.
Two devices on one contract
Cell C sells combo deals that pair two phones, or a phone with a wearable or a laptop with a router, on one monthly price. See 2 Phones On 1 Contract Deals Cell C before applying if you need more than one device.
What to Do if Your Application Is Declined
A declined application doesn’t have to be the end of the road. Cell C doesn’t publish an appeals process on its contracts page, but these steps usually help:
1. Ask Cell C why. Call 084 135 or visit a Cell C store and ask whether the decline was about credit, affordability or missing documents. 2. Fix document problems. If something was unclear, outdated or mismatched, resubmit with corrected documents. 3. Check your credit report. Get a copy of your credit report from a credit bureau before you apply, and dispute any errors you find. 4. Apply for a smaller deal. A cheaper phone, a lower package or a SIM-only plan may be more affordable. 5. Consider a TopUp plan. A capped bill may be easier to approve and manage. 6. Look at other brands. Compare lower-priced handsets, including Cell C Sony Xperia Contract Deals and Cell C’s Android range, if a premium phone is out of reach.
Avoid applying repeatedly in a short space of time. Multiple credit enquiries can count against you.
