Electronics retailers such as Hifi Corp sell phones, laptops, TVs and appliances on monthly instalments. These are retailer credit agreements, not mobile network contracts — a distinction that changes the terms and who you owe.
What to establish
- Who the credit provider is — the retailer, a bank, or a third party
- The interest rate and all fees, in writing
- The total repayable against the cash price
- Whether insurance or add-ons are included and optional
- What happens on a missed payment
Retailer credit is regulated as credit in South Africa, so an affordability assessment applies and defaults are reported to credit bureaus.
Compare the total, not the monthly
This matters most on retailer credit, where terms can run long. A low monthly figure across an extended period can substantially exceed the cash price, and on fast-depreciating electronics you may finish owing more than the item is worth.
For phones specifically
Compare retailer finance against a network contract on the same handset, and against buying outright with a SIM only deal. All three are available and the totals differ meaningfully.
Note also whether a retailer-sold phone is network-locked, which affects your plan options.

Frequently asked questions
Is retailer credit a network contract?
No. It is a credit agreement with the retailer or its credit provider.
Does it affect my credit record?
Yes, like any credit agreement.
What should I compare?
Total repayable against the cash price, and against a network contract for the same device.
Will a phone bought there be unlocked?
Confirm before buying, since it affects your plan choices.
