A phone contract without a credit check does not exist in South Africa. A contract is a credit agreement, and credit agreements require an affordability assessment by law.

Any offer promising otherwise is either not a contract, or not what it appears.

What genuinely involves no credit check

Option Why no check applies
Prepaid No agreement, nothing financed
Handset bought outright No credit extended
Lay-by You pay before collecting

These are real routes, not fallbacks. Prepaid in particular carries an advantage no contract can: you cannot default on it, so it cannot damage your record.

The lower-threshold contract

If you want a contract and expect difficulty, SIM-only involves far less credit than a handset deal — no device is financed — so the bar is considerably lower. An assessment still applies.

Why the promise is a warning

The National Credit Regulator has warned consumers about credit providers promising credit to blacklisted consumers, precisely because affordability checks are mandatory. An offer to bypass a legal requirement should raise questions rather than hopes.

Ask who the credit provider is, whether they are NCR registered, and what the total repayable is — in writing.
