Two phones on one contract puts both devices, and all the liability, on a single person’s name. That is the whole proposition — and the whole risk.
What you are actually agreeing to
One account holder is assessed, and one account holder is liable for the full amount. If the second user stops contributing, the debt and the credit record consequences belong entirely to the person who signed.
That works between people with genuinely shared finances. Between friends, or where a relationship may change over two years, it frequently does not.
The genuine advantages
- One application rather than two assessments
- One monthly bill to manage
- Bundled pricing that can beat two separate contracts
- Useful where the second user cannot qualify — a student or a parent
Check before signing
- Whether allocations are shared or separate — shared means one heavy user can exhaust both
- Whether a line can be removed independently, and at what cost
- The total repayable against two separate contracts
- Whether both handsets are specified, or one is a low-end filler
That last point matters. Some deals pair a good phone with a much weaker second device — fine if you know, poor value if you assumed parity.
