Contract deals under R200 is the lowest rung of the South African contract market. At this level the honest position is that you are choosing between a very basic handset on a long term, or SIM-only with a decent allocation.

For most people the second is the better use of the money.

What is realistic here

Option What to expect
Entry handset with a small bundle Basic smartphone, minimal data, often a 36-month term to reach the price
SIM-only No device, but a considerably larger allocation for the same money

Be sceptical of any handset deal at this level with a short term. The usual way providers reach this monthly figure is by stretching the contract, which raises the total paid.

Why SIM-only usually wins here

At R200 a month, a meaningful share of a handset contract goes toward device financing rather than airtime and data. Remove the handset and the whole amount buys connectivity.

If you have a working phone, that is a large practical difference at this budget — larger proportionally than at any higher tier. See SIM only deals under R200 and cheap SIM only deals.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a phone contract under R200?

Usually only a basic handset, often on a longer term. SIM-only gives more for the same money if you have a phone.

Why are these often 36 months?

Stretching the term is how providers reach a low monthly figure. The total paid is higher.

What should I check most carefully?

The software support window, which is shortest on the cheapest handsets.

Is it worth stepping up a tier?

Often yes. The improvement between this band and the next is larger than the price difference suggests.
