The S20 FE was the phone that made Fan Edition mean something. It kept the parts of the flagship people actually used and cut the parts they did not — and it was widely judged better value than the S20 it was based on.
What it kept and what it cut

The important detail: a plastic back is arguably better on a phone you will drop. It survives impacts that crack glass, and costs far less to replace. The FE’s biggest “compromise” was a practical advantage.
Why the formula worked
Flagship prices are driven heavily by materials, screen resolution and camera hardware most owners never push. Remove those and the everyday experience barely changes — the screen refresh rate, the battery and the main camera carry it.

Where the S20 FE stands now
From 2020, and its support window has ended or is very close. Confirm the current position before buying, and do not finance one over 24 months.
If you own one, it remains a capable phone — just keep banking apps off it once updates stop.
