TFG (The Foschini Group) sells phones mainly through its hi stores and Bash, its online store, but most of those phones are network-locked prepaid handsets, not network contracts. You can buy them for cash or on a TFG Money Account, which is a store credit facility. TFG’s official pages also mention an MTN contract route billed to a TFG Money Account, offered through SMS invitations and agent call-backs rather than a public deal list. This hub explains what that means, how it compares with a standard network contract, and where to compare other options.
Compare TFG Contract Deals
The key question is what you are actually signing up for. “Buying a phone on account” at TFG and “taking out a cellphone contract” are different products with different terms.
| Route at TFG | What you get | Who you owe | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Prepaid phone, paid in full | Network-locked (or open) handset, no monthly plan | Nobody, once paid | Which network the phone is locked to |
| Prepaid phone on TFG Money Account | Handset now, repaid over the account term | TFG (store credit) | Interest, monthly service fee, credit life cover, total repayment |
| MTN contract billed to TFG Money Account | MTN contract with monthly airtime/data, charged to your account | MTN contract terms, paid via TFG account | Contract length, what the plan includes, how billing works if your account falls behind |
| Airtime and data on TFG Money Account | Prepaid bundles billed to the account | TFG (store credit) | That you are paying interest-bearing credit for airtime |
If you want a wide choice of phones on a monthly network plan, a network or specialist dealer is usually the more direct route. Compare general contract deals across networks before choosing TFG, or go back to contract deals by retailer to see how other stores sell phones.
Current TFG Contract Deals
CURRENT MARKET FACT (checked September 2026): the hi cellphone range on Bash lists handsets by network, for example Vodacom, MTN, Telkom and Cell C versions of the same model. These are prepaid, network-locked phones. Product pages say TFG Money Account holders can buy them on credit, and the instalment examples shown are marked as estimates, not guaranteed amounts.
TFG’s help centre also publishes terms for a TFG Connect MTN contract campaign. In it, customers receive an SMS invitation, speak to an authorised agent and have an MTN contract activated and billed to their TFG Money Account. Because this is invitation-led, there is no public page listing current MTN contract deals, prices or handsets. Ask TFG directly whether you can apply without an invitation.
Deals by Network or Provider
MTN
MTN is the only network with a contract route that we could confirm on TFG’s official pages. It works through TFG Connect and your TFG Money Account. Confirm the plan, contract length and handset (if any) before agreeing on the call.
Vodacom, Telkom and Cell C
For these networks, TFG’s official pages show network-locked prepaid handsets rather than contracts. If you want a Vodacom, Telkom or Cell C contract, compare the network’s own deals or a dealer that sells that network’s contracts.
Monthly Prices and Contract Terms
We have not listed prices, because TFG does not publish a public contract price list and account instalments depend on the customer. What TFG does state:
- A standard TFG Money Account has a 12-month repayment plan, charges interest and adds a monthly service fee.
- A 6-month interest-free plan exists, provided the account is paid on time and in full every month.
- Credit life cover is required on the account.
- Airtime and data can be billed directly to the account.
Compare that with a network contract, which normally combines a monthly plan with handset repayments over a fixed term. The monthly figure on a store account is a debt repayment. On a contract, it pays for both your service and your phone.
Popular Options
Common reasons shoppers look at TFG for phones:
- Already have a TFG Money Account. Buying an entry-level or mid-range prepaid phone on an existing account can be convenient, but check the total cost including interest and fees.
- Want a prepaid phone for a family member. Network-locked handsets often come with starter packs, but they stay tied to that network.
- Invited to an MTN contract offer. Treat the call like any contract sale: ask for the plan name, term, monthly amount and cancellation terms in writing.
How to Choose the Right Deal
1. Decide whether you need a contract at all. If you only need a phone, a prepaid handset may be enough. 2. Compare the total cost. Add up the full repayment on the account, or the monthly amount multiplied by the term on a contract. 3. Check the lock. A network-locked phone limits which SIM you can use. 4. Check who assesses you. TFG runs its own credit check for the account, and a network contract has its own terms. Approval is never guaranteed on either. 5. Compare other retailers. See how iStore contract deals and PhoneFinder contract deals are structured before deciding.
TFG Contract Deals FAQs
Does TFG sell cellphone contracts?
In a limited way. TFG’s official pages show an MTN contract route billed to a TFG Money Account, offered through SMS invitations and agent call-backs. Most phones sold at hi and on Bash are prepaid, network-locked handsets.
Can I buy a phone on my TFG account?
Yes. Product pages state that TFG Money Account holders can get eligible phones on credit. The account charges interest and a monthly service fee, and any instalment shown is only an example.
Are TFG phones locked to a network?
Many are. The hi range on Bash lists models by network, such as Vodacom or MTN versions. Check the product name before buying.
Where do I RICA a SIM bought from TFG?
TFG says you can RICA at any hi store or through your service provider’s self-service option.
