Before comparing any smaller-provider phone deal, establish what is actually being sold. Terms vary between providers and change often, so confirm the specifics directly — the questions below are what to ask.
The four questions that matter
- Is the device new, refurbished or pre-owned? This should be stated plainly. If it is not, ask.
- Is this credit, rental or subscription? They are different agreements with different consequences — and with rental, you may own nothing at the end.
- Who is the credit provider, and are they NCR registered?
- What is the total repayable? Monthly × term, plus deposit and fees.
Get the answers in writing. A provider who will not put them in writing has told you something.
Refurbished can be genuinely good value
A properly refurbished phone from a reputable seller offers most of a new device’s usefulness for considerably less — and premium handsets in particular hold up for years.
What separates a good refurbished purchase from a bad one:
- Battery health — the component that actually degrades. Ask for the figure.
- Warranty length, and who honours it
- Grading — what the cosmetic grade means in practice
- Return period if it arrives faulty

Compare against the obvious alternative
Price the same handset on a network contract, and on retail credit paired with a SIM-only plan. Smaller providers sometimes beat both — but you should know by how much.
