To apply for a Telkom contract online, you choose a deal on Telkom’s website, submit your personal, income and banking details for credit vetting, and complete RICA verification for your SIM. Telkom asks for an ID or passport, a recent payslip, a recent three-month bank statement and proof of residence. Approval depends on Telkom’s credit and affordability assessment.

Before you apply, compare the device, SIM-only and data options on our Telkom contract deals page so you know which deal you’re applying for.

Who Can Apply

Telkom’s standard terms set out when it may decline an application. Reading them in reverse gives a practical picture of who is in a position to apply.

You’re more likely to meet the basic requirements if you:

Telkom’s terms also say it may decline an application if the applicant has been blacklisted or has an adverse credit rating, and that it can refuse an application at its discretion.

If you’re unsure about your credit record, read our guide to 2 phones on 1 contract deals for blacklisted applicants before applying. It explains how to check your credit report and which alternatives may suit you.

What You Need Before Applying

Telkom’s Mobile Data FAQ lists the documents needed to sign up for a contract:

Document What to have ready
ID or passport A clear photo or scan
Recent payslip Your latest payslip
Bank statement A recent three-month bank statement
Proof of residence For example, a utility bill, store account statement or bank statement
Banking details For your monthly debit order
Contact details A working cellphone number and email address for verification links

Telkom’s RICA process also asks for your SIM pack’s ICCID number and a selfie for facial verification, so have your phone camera ready.

Choose your deal first

Decide on the product before you start:

How the Online Application Works

The exact screens can change, but the process generally follows these steps.

1. Select a deal

Browse Telkom’s online deals, choose your device or plan, and select the contract term. Telkom’s current catalogue lists device deals on 24 and 36-month terms.

2. Enter your details

Provide your personal, contact, employment, income and banking information. Telkom’s terms say you give it permission to carry out credit reference enquiries and to check the information you supply.

3. Credit vetting

Telkom assesses your credit record and affordability. It may approve the application, ask for a deposit, or decline it.

4. Upload documents

Submit your ID, payslip, bank statement and proof of residence if requested.

5. Accept the contract

Review the deal summary and terms, including the monthly amount, term, once-off fees and debit order date, before accepting.

6. Delivery and RICA

After approval, your order is processed for delivery. To activate the SIM, Telkom’s online RICA process asks you to:

1. enter your SA ID details and the ICCID number from the back of the SIM pack; 2. fill in your personal and contact details; 3. open the link sent by email and SMS; 4. upload a photo or scan of your ID; 5. upload proof of residence; 6. take a selfie for facial verification.

Track your order

Telkom’s order tracking page lets you enter your ID or passport number to receive a secure tracking link. It says only new contract orders can be tracked.

Credit Checks and Approval

Telkom’s standard terms make every application subject to its credit referencing procedure, and its Mobile Data FAQ confirms that signing up involves credit vetting. The assessment looks at your credit record and whether you can afford the new monthly commitment.

What can affect the outcome

Deposits and credit limits

Telkom’s terms say it may require security, such as a deposit or surety, as a pre-condition for providing the service. Telkom also sets a credit limit based on your credit profile, which caps out-of-bundle spending.

Approval is never automatic. Choosing a lower-value deal or a SIM-only plan reduces the commitment being assessed, but the decision remains Telkom’s.

Fees, Contract Terms and Delivery

Item What to check
Contract term 24 or 36 months on device deals; some SIM-only plans are month-to-month
Once-off SIM and connection fee Telkom’s catalogue lists R99 on its listed deals (checked September 2026)
Activation fee Telkom’s deals page mentions zero activation fees on specific online deals
Delivery Telkom’s deals page mentions free delivery on specific online deals
Deposit May be required after vetting
Out-of-bundle usage Charged against your credit or spend limit
Debit order Cancelling your debit order without Telkom’s prior written consent is a breach of the agreement, per Telkom’s terms

Current catalogue deals are valid from 7 September to 6 October 2026 or while stocks last. Confirm fees and inclusions on the deal page before you submit.

What to Do if Your Application Is Declined

A decline is a decision on that application, not a permanent verdict.

1. Find out why, if possible. Contact Telkom to ask whether it was affordability, credit record, documents or coverage. 2. Check your details. Incorrect information is one of the listed grounds for declining. 3. Check your credit report with the credit bureaus, and dispute any errors. 4. Settle any Telkom arrears if you have an outstanding balance. 5. Consider a smaller commitment, such as a SIM-only or month-to-month plan, or a lower-value device. 6. Avoid repeated applications in a short period while nothing has changed.
