MTN data contracts come in two main types. MTN Mobile Internet plans are SIM-based data plans with a set amount of data each month, for a phone, tablet, laptop or portable router. MTN Home Internet plans are uncapped 4G/5G plans that come with a free-to-use home router and are subject to a Fair Usage Policy. In MTN’s September 2026 catalogue, Mobile Internet started at R129 PM, and Home Internet 5G/LTE started at R339 PMx24, checked September 2026.

The Platinum price of R229 PMx24 (down from R259) is an in-store exclusive running from 13 August to 6 October 2026. The catalogue doesn’t state the contract term for the lower-data “PM” prices, so confirm it with MTN before you choose.
Much of the larger bundles is Streaming Data, which MTN says works on services such as YouTube, Netflix, DStv Stream, Disney+ and Prime Video. Don’t count it as general-purpose data until you’ve checked which services it covers.

- Shesh@ 5G 600: 600GB for R439 PMx24. That’s 300GB at best 5G speed plus 300GB at up to 30Mbps on Home Pro.
Both are also available on 12-month contracts, but only within MTN’s fixed 5G coverage area, subject to address verification. The promotion runs from 7 September to 6 October 2026.
Monthly Prices and Contract Terms
Fees on a new contract
- SIM and connection fee: a once-off in-store fee of R150 on new contract deals.
- Upfront payment: from 7 September 2026, new postpaid Mobile and Home contract activations need an upfront payment equal to one month’s subscription fee. This doesn’t apply to add-lines, upgrades on existing variable-length contract billing profiles or month-to-month agreements.
Both figures were checked September 2026. On a R469 PMx24 Home Internet Pro plan, for example, the first payment could include the R150 fee plus a month’s subscription upfront.
Contract length and cancelling
Home Internet deals are offered on 12- and 24-month contracts, subject to credit vetting, and early cancellation fees apply. The 12-month option costs more per month. It suits people who might move house or switch to fibre.
Month-to-month and no-contract options
MTN’s month-to-month plan terms describe a one-month contract that you pay in advance. Month-to-month plans are excluded from some catalogue promotions, including the free 10GB bonus. If you search for “no contract” data deals, compare month-to-month plans against prepaid data bundles before committing to 24 months.
What Is Included
Mobile Internet
- Anytime Data, usable at any time.
- Shareable Anytime Data. MTN says you can share it with up to five people through the MTN App (Account, then Share my data). Bonus, free, promotional and streaming data can’t be shared.
- Bonus and Streaming Data on the 24-month bundles.
- A free once-off 10GB through the MTN App for new customers, upgrades or added lines on 24- and 36-month contracts. It’s valid for 30 days.
Home Internet
- A free-to-use 5G home router, available as long as you stay active on the plan. The catalogue shows one 5G router for Starter and Pro and another for Premium, Ultra and Infinite, and says models may vary.
- Uncapped data up to your plan’s FUP threshold, then reduced speeds.
How the Fair Usage Policy works
MTN’s catalogue terms say Home Internet speeds run up to the plan’s threshold. After that, they drop to between 512Kbps and 2Mbps, and you keep access for the rest of the month. On Shesh@ 5G, speeds drop in steps after the allocation: to up to 2Mbps, then 1Mbps, then 512Kbps. MTN’s Fair Usage Policy help page says normal maximum speed is restored the next month.
Home Internet devices are network- and location-locked, and Shesh@ 5G is geolocked to your registered address. You can’t use a Home Internet plan as mobile data away from home.

How to Choose the Right Deal
1. Decide where you’ll use the data. On the go means Mobile Internet. Mainly at home means Home Internet. 2. Check coverage first. MTN’s help centre says to check its coverage map for 4G or 5G at your address before signing up for a home plan. 3. Count the general-purpose data. On Mobile Internet bundles, compare the Anytime Data, not just the headline total. 4. Compare FUP thresholds, not just speeds. Heavy users should check the threshold that applies after their plan’s allocation. 5. Choose 12 or 24 months carefully. Moving house can affect a location-locked Home Internet plan. 6. Budget for day one. Include the R150 SIM and connection fee and the upfront month’s subscription. 7. Apply. Contracts go through MTN’s credit vetting, and approval isn’t guaranteed. You can apply in MTN stores, and MTN says home deals can also be bought online.
MTN Data Contract Deals FAQs
Does MTN offer SIM-only data contracts?
Yes. MTN Mobile Internet plans are data plans on a SIM, from Silver up to Diamond in the September 2026 catalogue. See the Y’ello Trader for the full list.
Are there unlimited data contract deals at MTN?
MTN Home Internet plans are uncapped, but a Fair Usage Policy reduces speeds once you pass the plan’s threshold.
Can I use an MTN Home Internet SIM in my phone?
MTN’s terms say Home Internet devices are network- and location-locked. The plans are designed for the router at your registered address.
What is Streaming Data?
It’s data MTN allocates for streaming services such as YouTube, Netflix, DStv Stream, Disney+ and Prime Video. Check with MTN which services qualify before you count it towards general browsing or work.
Does unused data carry over?
It depends on the plan. Ask MTN before you sign, because promotional bonus data may not carry over.
Can I share my MTN data?
Mobile Internet plans with Shareable Anytime Data let you share it with up to five people through the MTN App.
