The iPhone 14 Pro Max introduced the Dynamic Island and Apple’s first 48-megapixel iPhone sensor, and it was the last Pro Max built in stainless steel before the move to titanium. On MTN it typically sits between the older pre-owned flagships and current-generation pricing.
For a lot of buyers it is the sweet spot in the Pro Max range: the always-on display, the 48MP camera and the telephoto lens, without paying current-flagship rates.
The one dated element is Lightning — this is the last Pro Max that will not share a cable with newer Apple devices.
Compare options
| What to compare | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Monthly instalment | High on a Pro Max — the 24-month total is the figure that matters |
| Which plan tier | Determines the data and the advertised price |
| Data allocation | Check the anytime portion, not the headline number |
| Storage size | Pro Max models span several tiers at very different prices |
| Handset condition | New or certified pre-owned |
| Insurance | The outstanding balance is large if the handset is lost or stolen |
| Trade-in value | Materially changes which deal is actually cheapest |
| Battery health | Critical on any pre-owned Pro Max |

Against other networks. See iPhone 14 Pro Max Contract Deals Telkom and iPhone 14 Pro Max Contract Deals Vodacom.
Against the 15 Pro Max on MTN. Adds USB-C, titanium and a 5x telephoto. If the monthly gap is small, those are meaningful over two years. See MTN iPhone 15 Pro Max contract deals.
Against the standard iPhone 14. Same generation at a much lower cost, without the telephoto lens or 120Hz display. See MTN iPhone 14 contract deals.
Best-fit use cases
Use-case considerations
You want the Pro Max experience without current pricing. The clearest case — most of what people notice daily, at a lower instalment.
You photograph a lot. The 48MP main sensor was a real step change on this generation.
You want an always-on display. Introduced on the 14 Pro models and still uncommon outside the Pro line.
You want USB-C. Not here. The 15 Pro Max is the first Pro Max with it.
You want the lightest large iPhone. Stainless steel makes this heavier than the titanium models that followed.
Storage matters. A 48MP camera and ProRes video fill space quickly — 256GB is a more realistic floor than 128GB.

What to check before applying
- Total contract cost — monthly instalment × 24, plus any upfront amount.
- The data allocation, and how much of it is anytime data.
- Storage capacity on the specific listing.
- Data allocation, and what happens when it runs out — out-of-bundle rates or a hard stop.
- Handset condition — new or certified pre-owned — and the warranty.
- Early cancellation terms, including the outstanding handset balance.
- What the plan reverts to at the end of the term.
- Insurance, since the outstanding balance stays payable if the handset is lost or stolen.
- MTN coverage at your home and work addresses.
MTN contract applications are subject to MTN’s own checks — identification, proof of address, banking details, RICA registration, and generally a credit and affordability assessment. Requirements can change. Approval is not guaranteed.
FAQs
What is the Dynamic Island?
The pill-shaped cutout that replaced the notch, introduced on the 14 Pro models. It displays live activities such as timers, music controls and navigation.
Does the 14 Pro Max have USB-C?
No. It uses Lightning. USB-C arrived with the iPhone 15 generation, so this is the last Pro Max without it.
How much storage do I need?
More than you might expect. The 48MP camera and high-resolution video fill space quickly, and capacity cannot be added later. 256GB is a sensible minimum for regular camera use.
Is the 15 Pro Max worth the extra?
If the monthly gap is small, yes — USB-C, a lighter titanium frame and a 5x telephoto rather than 3x are meaningful across two years.
What happens at the end of the contract?
The handset is paid off and becomes yours, but the plan commonly continues month-to-month at the same price unless you act. Diarise the end date and either move to SIM-only or upgrade — continuing means paying a handset-inclusive rate for service alone.
Can I keep my number if I switch to MTN?
Number portability applies between South African providers, so you can bring your existing number. Confirm the porting process and timing before switching, and do not cancel your old plan until the port has completed.
