Huawei contract deals require one check before any other, and it has nothing to do with price: newer Huawei handsets ship without Google Mobile Services. Apps come through Huawei’s AppGallery rather than the Google Play Store.
That single fact should decide whether Huawei suits you, because everything else about the phones is strong.
The software position
Huawei devices released after the company lost access to Google services run HarmonyOS or EMUI without GMS. There is no Play Store, and Google’s own apps are not available in their usual form.
AppGallery has grown considerably and covers a large share of South African apps, including several major banking apps. But coverage is not identical to Play, and some apps behave differently or arrive later.
The check to run before signing
Write down the apps you genuinely rely on — your bank, anything for work, ride-hailing, delivery, medical aid, school communication — and confirm each is available on AppGallery and is the full version rather than a web wrapper.
If they all check out, the software position is a non-issue for you. If two or three are missing, it will be a daily irritation for the length of your contract.
What Huawei does well
- Cameras. Huawei has been among the strongest camera manufacturers for years, particularly on its flagship range.
- Build quality and materials at every tier.
- Battery life, often better than comparably priced rivals.
- Pricing, since the software situation has softened resale and retail prices.
That last point cuts both ways — it makes the hardware better value up front and worth less when you sell.
