Samsung’s A-series numbering confuses almost everyone, and the A23 sits right in the middle of it. Understanding the pattern makes every A-series comparison easier.
How to read an A-series name
Take the A23. The first digit is the tier and the second is the generation:
- A0x and A1x — entry level
- A2x and A3x — lower mid-range
- A5x — upper mid-range, the value sweet spot
- A7x and above — near-flagship
So an A23 is tier 2, generation 3. An A34 is a tier above it, a generation newer. Higher first digit means a better phone; higher second digit means a newer one.
What the suffixes mean
| Suffix | Meaning |
|---|---|
| s | A revised version, usually minor changes |
| 5G | Adds 5G — and sometimes other differences |
| e / Lite | A cut-down version of the base model |
Do not assume a 5G variant is otherwise identical to the 4G one. Samsung has shipped versions with different screens and internals under the same number. Check the specific variant.
See Galaxy A32 5G for a case where the two versions differed.
Where the A23 sits
Lower mid-range, and now several years old. It handles everyday use comfortably — calls, messaging, social media, streaming — but was never aimed at demanding games or low-light photography.
