The two checks that matter
Remaining software support. Confirm the model will still receive updates through your entire contract term. The older the handset, the shorter the term you should sign — a 36-month contract on a device already several years old risks ending after support has stopped, while you are still paying.
Activation lock. The device must be fully signed out of the previous owner’s Apple account or it cannot be used at all. This is the difference between a bargain and a paperweight, and buying through a retailer rather than privately largely removes the risk.
The trade worth understanding
At a given monthly figure you can usually have a new entry model, or a pre-owned higher-tier model. The pre-owned option typically gives a better camera system; the new one gives a full support window, a fresh battery and a warranty.
If you keep phones a long time, the new entry model is usually the safer buy. If you replace every two years and want the best camera at the price, pre-owned makes sense.
