Month-to-month home internet costs more per month than a fixed term. With wireless internet specifically, that premium is often worth paying for the first month — because unlike most products, you cannot fully evaluate this one before buying.
Why wireless is a special case
Fibre performance is largely predictable once installed. Wireless is not: it depends on signal at your router’s position and on how congested the local tower gets in the evening. Neither is fully knowable from a coverage map.
A month-to-month package lets you find out with a month’s exposure rather than twenty-four. If it performs, switch to a fixed term and save. If it does not, you leave.
Direct comparison
| Month-to-month | Fixed term | |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly cost | Higher | Lower |
| Commitment | Notice period only | 12 to 24 months |
| If performance disappoints | Leave | Settle to exit |
| Router | Sometimes bought separately | Often included |
| Best for | Testing, or uncertain circumstances | Proven signal, settled address |
When month-to-month is right
- You have not tested the connection at your address.
- You are renting and may move.
- Fibre is coming and you need something in the meantime.
- You are between options and want time to compare.
When a fixed term is right
Once the connection is proven at your address and you expect to stay, the fixed term is simply cheaper for the same service. Paying the month-to-month premium indefinitely is spending on flexibility you have stopped needing.
Check the exit terms either way
- Notice period on month-to-month — usually one calendar month rather than immediate.
- Settlement cost on a fixed term if you leave early.
- Router ownership — whether you keep it, and whether it is network-locked.
- Location lock, which matters if you move.

Frequently asked questions
Is month-to-month much more expensive?
It carries a premium for the same service. Over one or two months while testing, that is usually money well spent.
Can I switch to a fixed term later?
Generally yes, once you are confident in the connection. Confirm with the provider.
Do I keep the router?
It depends on the package. Bundled routers are often network-locked; check before assuming.
What notice do I need to give?
Commonly one calendar month. Confirm the specific terms.
