Check Coverage Before An Internet Deal

For home internet the coverage check is narrower than for a phone but stricter. You only need one location to work — but it has to work properly, because the router cannot move to find signal.

Test the position, not the address

This is the step people skip. Signal can differ noticeably between the front and back of one property, and between ground and upper floors. A test at your front gate tells you little about a router in a back room.

Test at the exact spot the router will stand. If that position is poor but another is good, you have a solvable problem — an ethernet run or a mesh extender — rather than a wrong provider.

Test in the evening

The second commonly skipped step. Wireless connections share tower capacity, so performance drops when the local area is busy — typically weekday evenings.

A connection that tests well at 11am on a Tuesday can be markedly slower at 8pm. Since evening is when most households actually use their internet, that is the test that matters.

5G needs a stricter check than LTE

5G uses higher frequency bands, which carry more data but travel shorter distances and penetrate walls less easily. Coverage can therefore differ between neighbouring properties.

Check fibre first anyway

How to test cheaply

  1. Check each provider’s coverage map for your exact address.
  2. Ask immediate neighbours what they use and how it performs.
  3. Use a prepaid data SIM in a phone, held at the router’s intended position.
  4. Repeat during evening peak.
  5. Prefer a month-to-month package for the first month if still uncertain.
