Phone and data bundle deals pair a handset contract with an additional data allocation — either a larger bundle on the same line, or a separate data SIM for another device.
Those two structures are quite different, and knowing which you are being offered decides whether the deal is worth taking.

The second structure only makes sense if the extra device genuinely exists and genuinely needs its own connection.
The question to ask first
Could you tether instead? Most phones share their connection over WiFi, and a larger allocation on one line covers a laptop or tablet without a second SIM, a second RICA registration or a second monthly line.
A separate data SIM earns its place when the device is used simultaneously with the phone, when tethering would drain the phone battery through a working day, or when the second device belongs to someone else. Otherwise a bigger single bundle is simpler and usually cheaper.

- Whether the extra data is peak or off-peak, which can make it far less useful.
- Total across the term against the same handset on a standard contract plus a separate data SIM.
