Data deals under R100 are the entry tier of the South African data market. Used for the right job they are good value. Used as a main connection they usually cost more than they save, because small allocations run out and out-of-bundle rates are considerably higher.
What this budget realistically covers
Messaging, email, navigation and light browsing sit comfortably here. Video streaming does not — it is almost always the reason a bundle at this level disappears early.
That makes this tier well suited to specific jobs rather than general use:
- A tablet used occasionally away from WiFi.
- A second device or backup SIM.
- A phone used mostly on WiFi at home and work.
- A child’s device, where a small allocation is a feature.
The out-of-bundle trap
This matters more at this tier than anywhere else. A cheap bundle plus regular out-of-bundle usage frequently costs more than a larger bundle would have.
Before choosing, ask what the out-of-bundle rate is and whether spending can be capped. If you routinely exceed the allocation, stepping up to data deals under R200 is usually cheaper than repeated top-ups.
Compare by network
| Provider | Compare |
|---|---|
| Telkom | Usually the largest allocation at this price |
| Cell C | Competitive; confirm roaming quality locally |
| MTN | Own network consistency |
| Vodacom | Widest coverage, smallest allocation here |
Also check the peak and off-peak split, which is common at this level and can make an allocation less useful than it appears.

Frequently asked questions
Is under R100 enough?
For light use on a second device, yes. For a main phone with video streaming, no.
What uses it up fastest?
Video streaming, by a wide margin.
Is prepaid better at this level?
Prepaid avoids commitment but costs more per gigabyte. Contract is cheaper per unit if used consistently.
Can I cap out-of-bundle spending?
Many providers allow it. Ask specifically — this is the main cost risk at this tier.
