MTN SIM only deals give you data, minutes and SMS on MTN’s own national network without financing a handset. If you already have a working phone, this is the cheapest way to use MTN by a wide margin, because none of the monthly figure goes toward a device.
MTN’s particular argument is infrastructure. Unlike Cell C, it runs its own national network, so service quality does not depend on a roaming agreement. That consistency is what you are paying for relative to the cheaper providers.
The plan types available
| Type | How it works | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|
| Month-to-month | No fixed term, cancel with notice | Testing coverage, or uncertain circumstances |
| 12 or 24-month | Fixed term, lower monthly cost | Settled users wanting the best rate |
| Data-only | Data without voice minutes | Tablets, routers and second devices |
Data-only options are covered on MTN data deals, and month-to-month across providers on month to month SIM only deals.
Why SIM-only is the bigger saving
On a handset contract, a substantial share of the monthly figure is device financing rather than airtime and data. Removing the handset removes that portion entirely, which is why SIM-only routinely costs a fraction of a device contract for the same allocation.
It also removes the lock-in. With no device being paid off, switching providers later is straightforward, which is worth something in a market where coverage varies by area.
Compare by budget
Compare by budget
- Size the bundle on real usage. Check a few months of actual consumption rather than guessing.
- Weigh term against flexibility. A fixed term is cheaper monthly; month-to-month lets you leave.
- Check out-of-bundle rates and whether they can be capped.
- Look at the peak and off-peak split on larger allocations.
Price bands are on SIM only deals under R100 and SIM only deals under R200, with cheaper options generally on cheap SIM only deals.
Compare with other networks
| Provider | Position against MTN |
|---|---|
| Vodacom | Wider coverage, usually slightly higher pricing |
| Telkom | Often more data per rand, weaker outside metros |
| Cell C | Competitive pricing, but runs on roaming |

Before you apply

- Confirm porting if you want to keep your number.
- RICA — proof of identity and address required.
- Credit assessment. Contract SIM-only involves one, though the threshold is lower than for device contracts.

Frequently asked questions
Is MTN SIM-only cheaper than an MTN contract?
Considerably, because no handset is financed. It requires a working phone you already own.
Will my current phone work on MTN?
Usually, provided it is unlocked and supports MTN’s bands. Phones bought on contract elsewhere may be locked until that term completes.
Can I keep my number?
Yes. Number portability applies across South African providers.
Does SIM-only need a credit check?
Contract plans generally do, at a lower threshold than device contracts. Prepaid involves none.
Is month-to-month worth the extra?
It is while you are testing coverage. Once confident, a fixed term costs less.
