MTN sells two pre-owned iPhones on contract: the iPhone 13 128GB from R399 pm x 36 and the iPhone 14 128GB from R449 pm x 36 (MTN online shop and MTN catalogue valid until 6 October 2026, checked September 2026). Both come on MTN’s entry Yellow Core plan at those prices, and both are open to new contracts, additional lines and upgrades. MTN’s catalogue also lists the two as a pre-owned pair, an iPhone 14 + iPhone 13 at R799 pm x 36, while stock lasts. MTN had no pre-owned iPhone 11 listed.
MTN calls these phones “pre-loved” in its catalogue. Its September 2026 catalogue described them as professionally tested with like-new grading, a 12-month device warranty and a 6-month battery warranty. Scratches and minor cosmetic marks aren’t covered. For MTN’s full range of phones and plans, see MTN Contract Deals.

| Pre-owned iPhone on MTN | Storage | From (checked September 2026) | Entry plan | Who can get it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone 13 | 128GB | R399 pm x 36 | Yellow Core | New, additional line or upgrade |
| iPhone 14 | 128GB | R449 pm x 36 | Yellow Core | New, additional line or upgrade |
| iPhone 14 + iPhone 13 pair | 128GB each | R799 pm x 36 | Yellow Core + MegaFlex 160 | Check with MTN |
The single-phone prices are the lowest listed combination: the entry plan over 36 months. The pair price is from MTN’s catalogue valid until 6 October 2026, and it isn’t labelled “2 FOR 1”. Higher plans and a 24-month term cost more each month.
Which one to choose
- iPhone 13: the lower monthly cost, if you mainly want an iPhone on a budget.
- iPhone 14: the newer model, for R50 more a month at the entry price. Worth it if you plan to keep the phone for the full 36 months.
Neither model is sold new by MTN. Its new iPhone range starts with newer models, which cost more each month.
Condition Grades, Warranty and Battery Health
This is how MTN describes its pre-owned iPhones officially. The wording below is from MTN’s September 2026 Y’ello Trader catalogue (valid 7 August to 6 September 2026). MTN’s September 2026 catalogue confirms the prices, but we haven’t checked whether this wording is unchanged, so ask MTN to confirm these terms still apply.
| Topic | What MTN states |
|---|---|
| Testing | “Professionally tested. Certified quality.” |
| Grading | Like-new grading |
| Device warranty | 12 months |
| Battery warranty | 6 months |
| Cosmetic condition | Used devices that may have scratches or minor cosmetic impairments, which aren’t covered by the warranty |
| eSIM | The devices are eSIM compatible |
| Stock | While stock lasts; ask in store for availability |
What MTN doesn’t state
- Battery health percentage. MTN gives a 6-month battery warranty but doesn’t publish a minimum battery health figure. Ask in store or check the battery health in Settings when the phone arrives.
- A pre-owned returns policy. We didn’t find a separate returns policy for pre-owned iPhones. MTN’s catalogue points to warranty terms on a third-party supplier site, which wasn’t available when we checked. Ask MTN how returns and faulty-device claims work before you sign.
- Grades beyond “like-new”. MTN uses one grade description, not an A/B/C scale.
Monthly Price and Contract Term
| What we saw on MTN (checked September 2026) | iPhone 13 | iPhone 14 |
|---|---|---|
| Lowest monthly price | R399 pm | R449 pm |
| Term for that price | 36 months | 36 months |
| Plan at that price | Yellow Core | Yellow Core |
| Other terms offered | 24 months | 24 months |
MTN’s product pages showed the Yellow Core plan with 1GB of anytime data and 60 all-net minutes. If you need more data, the monthly price rises with each plan step. The iPhone 14 page also offered an airtime-only plan option.
Total cost over the contract
At the entry price, the iPhone 13 comes to R14 364 over 36 months, and the iPhone 14 to R16 164. That’s before any once-off fees or plan changes. Choosing 24 months raises the monthly payment but ends the contract a year sooner.
Fees to check
MTN’s catalogues state that new contract deals bought in store carry a once-off SIM and connection fee. MTN’s online shop showed free delivery for these phones. Confirm the fee for your channel before you apply.
Available Networks and Providers
MTN isn’t the only network selling pre-owned iPhones on contract. Here’s what the others listed when we checked in September 2026.
| Network | Pre-owned iPhone models listed | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| MTN | iPhone 13, iPhone 14 | Online and in store; like-new grading per MTN’s catalogue |
| Vodacom | iPhone 11, iPhone 13, iPhone 14 | Also had two-phone pre-owned iPhone listings |
| Cell C | iPhone 13 (online); iPhone 13 and 14 in its booklet | Certified pre-owned; booklet deals in selected stores |
| Telkom | iPhone 13 | Sold as a single pre-owned device |
Warranty terms differ by network. Cell C’s booklet, for example, described PhoneCheck-certified devices, while MTN uses its own grading wording. Compare warranty length and battery cover, not just the monthly price.
Risks and What to Check Before Buying
A pre-owned iPhone on a 36-month contract means paying for a used phone for three years. Check these before signing:
- Age of the phone at the end of the contract. An iPhone 13 will be quite old by the time a 36-month contract ends. Check that it suits how long you keep phones.
- Software support. Older iPhones eventually stop getting the latest iOS updates. Apple doesn’t publish end dates in advance.
- Battery. The battery warranty is shorter than the device warranty. Check battery health on delivery and report issues early.
- Cosmetic marks. Scratches aren’t covered, so inspect the phone as soon as you receive it.
- Stock. Pre-owned stock is limited and colours may vary. Confirm what you’ll receive.
- Credit check. Approval depends on MTN’s credit and affordability checks and isn’t certain.
- Early cancellation. You’d usually need to settle the remaining device balance.
If you want two phones rather than one, MTN’s two-phone deals work differently. See MTN Contract Deals 2 Phones for how they’re structured.
New vs Pre-Owned Contract Deals
| Factor | Pre-owned iPhone on MTN | New iPhone on MTN |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly cost | Lower | Higher |
| Condition | Used; cosmetic marks possible | New, sealed |
| Warranty | 12-month device, 6-month battery (per MTN’s August catalogue) | Manufacturer’s warranty |
| Model age | Older models (13, 14) | Current and recent models |
| Availability | Limited stock | Some deals limited to upgrades |
Choose pre-owned if your budget matters more than having the latest model, and you’re comfortable with a used phone.
Choose new if you want the longest software support, a sealed device, or a model MTN doesn’t sell pre-owned. Compare MTN’s new models on MTN iPhone Contract Deals.
