Vodacom’s home internet page also advertises month-to-month fibre contracts with free installation and router. It says the router is delivered within 1 to 3 days and fibre is installed within 7 days. Check the current package, notice period, router terms and any non-standard installation charge on the order page.
Coverage, Speed and Technology
Coverage decides your options before price does.
- Fibre needs a fibre network in your street and a line into your home. Prepaid fibre from Telkom runs on Openserve, and the entry speed is only available in selected Openserve areas.
- 5G can be much faster than LTE, but only where the signal at your address is strong. rain notes its speeds are best effort and depend on 5G coverage at your address.
- LTE is more widely available, but speeds vary more with signal and network load.
Check coverage at your exact address on the provider’s own map before paying. A plan that works well a few streets away may not work for you.
Monthly Data, Fair-Use and Speed Limits
“Uncapped” and “unlimited” don’t all work the same way.
- Speed-capped unlimited. rain’s cheaper home plans set a maximum speed (30 Mbps or 60 Mbps) rather than a data cap.
- No fair-use policy. Telkom says its Uncapped Prepaid Fibre has no FUP and no throttling.
- Fair-use thresholds. Some unlimited LTE plans let you use a set amount at full speed, then reduce speed. Telkom’s contract LTE plans, for example, list fair-usage thresholds after which speeds drop.
- Time-limited data. Some wireless plans give uncapped access only in certain hours.
Read the plan’s fair-use or network management policy before deciding it’s “unlimited” for your household.
Routers, SIMs and Equipment
Equipment is where no-contract deals differ most.
Free-to-use routers
rain includes a free-to-use router with its home plans. It stays rain’s property: if you cancel, you need to return it or rain may lock it. Treat the router like a rental and keep the box.
Buying your own router
With prepaid LTE or 5G data, you normally buy a compatible router once-off. That costs more upfront but gives you freedom to switch SIMs and networks.
Fibre installation
Fibre needs an installation. Telkom’s prepaid Compact»Fibre offer says it includes installation and 14 days of uncapped data. For month-to-month fibre, check whether installation is free, whether the router has to be returned and whether an early-cancellation charge applies within a minimum period.

What month-to-month means
A month-to-month plan runs until you cancel. There is no fixed 24-month term, but there is usually a notice period, and billing may continue until the end of that period.
Prepaid top-up rules
Prepaid services don’t bill you monthly, but they have their own rules. Telkom’s prepaid fibre, for example, requires you to top up at least once every 90 days.
Fees to look for
- Activation, connection or installation fees
- Delivery fees for routers or SIMs
- Router return conditions and charges for unreturned equipment
- Pro-rata billing in the first and last months
Cancelling
Cancel through the provider’s official channels and keep proof. Return any free-to-use equipment in good condition and get confirmation that it was received.
Alternatives to Compare
- Fixed-term fibre or LTE contracts. If you’re settled at one address, a 24-month deal may include a router you keep, and sometimes a lower monthly price.
- SIM-only data contracts. Useful if you already own a router and want a predictable monthly bundle.
- Mobile hotspot. For one person with light use, a phone data bundle may be enough.
